Days 31 & 32 – Swear to God the Devil Made Me Do It

Days 31 & 32 – Swear to God the Devil Made Me Do It (The Front Bottoms) Inspired Illustration

We’ve made it to days 31 and 32 of this challenge! This time, I focused on Swear to God the Devil Made Me Do It from The Front Bottoms’ album Talon of the Hawk. The phrase "The Devil Made Me Do It" stood out immediately, sparking an image of control, manipulation, and consequences—all themes that resonate throughout the song. This one took me a bit longer to nail down :(

Concept Behind the Illustration

The idea of being controlled by an unseen force led me to this vintage tattoo-inspired design. The puppet strings being pulled by a sinister, clawed hand represent the feeling of losing control, whether due to bad decisions, fate, or something more sinister. The faceless figure emphasizes how universal that feeling can be, while the banner solidifies the lyric’s impact.

Design & Process

  • Style: Vintage tattoo flash, with bold lines and a distressed texture for an old-school feel.

  • Color Palette: Muted blues, reds, and yellows to create a retro, worn aesthetic.

  • Medium: Created Adobe Fresco and Photoshop.

Final Thoughts

With each new piece, I’m refining my style and experimenting with different influences. I love how this one turned out, and I’m excited to keep pushing forward!
