Day 36 - The Feud (The Front Bottoms)
Welcome to day 36 of Drawn to Noise! Today’s piece is inspired by The Feud by The Front Bottoms—specifically the line:
"You were my girl, you were my baby / You were my homemade mashed potatoes, 'cuits, and gravy."
The way Brian Sella crafts lyrics always amazes me—this one is such a simple yet deep metaphor for love, comfort, and nostalgia. Food has such a strong connection to relationships, and this line immediately painted a picture in my head. I wanted to capture that in a retro, risograph-style illustration that feels as warm and familiar as the memories the song evokes.
Creative Process
For this piece, I started with a simple sketch in Adobe Fresco, playing with composition and texture to get that vintage, slightly worn-out look. I kept the colors warm and muted—kind of like an old diner menu or a faded cookbook illustration. The worn edges and subtle texture help reinforce that feeling of something well-loved but slightly forgotten, much like the emotions in the song.
Final Thoughts
I love how this project lets me interpret music visually in ways I wouldn’t have thought of before. The Feud has always been a favorite of mine, and this illustration felt like the perfect way to pay tribute to it.
